Nuclear power is returning to Southeast Asia's policy conversation because the region's digital ambitions are becoming harder to power. AI-focused data centers need electricity that is reliable, large-scale, and available around the clock, and that demand profile does not fit neatly with old energy planning.

The region has flirted with nuclear power for decades without producing commercial atomic electricity. Safety concerns, high capital costs, weak regulatory capacity, and public distrust have repeatedly slowed or shelved plans. Those barriers have not disappeared.

What has changed is the urgency of the demand side. Governments want data centers because they promise investment, cloud capacity, and a place in the AI economy. But data centers also force a question that every country must answer: what kind of power system is being built to serve them?

Nuclear advocates argue that small modular reactors or future plants could provide stable low-carbon power. Skeptics counter that the technology is expensive, slow, and governance-heavy, especially in countries still strengthening basic grid management and emergency response systems.

The public should not treat this as a simple yes-or-no nuclear debate. It is really a question about sequencing. If governments sign data-center deals first and solve energy later, they may end up making rushed decisions about gas, coal, nuclear, or renewables under pressure from investors instead of through transparent planning.
